Algarve region sees its culture recognized by UNESCO

The Mediterranean diet was categorized on Wednesday as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO ) in Baku , Azerbaijan.

The decision was taken during the 8 . Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO , where it operates a Portuguese delegation , led by the Chamber of Tavira , who submitted the transnational application together with Cyprus, Croatia , Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco.

After the classification of fate , two years ago , Portugal back to join the list of goods of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and with the Mediterranean diet , this being the first time that the Algarve region sees its culture recognized by UNESCO .

The Mediterranean diet , originating from the Greek word ‘ daiata ‘ is a lifestyle passed down from generation to generation , covering techniques and production practices , including agriculture and fisheries , forms preparation , quilting and consumption of food , festivities , traditions oral and artistic expressions .
